The funding is administered via the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8c78525aacd5de65493877f97ad29c94\" style=\"color:#b7320e\">Rationale and purpose:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Current delays in the diagnosis of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) are unacceptable. The average time from the onset of symptoms to diagnosis is currently 10 -11 months\u00b9,\u00b2 and has remained unchanged for the past 25 years. In some children it takes considerably longer, thus risking irreversible joint and eye damage being present by the time of diagnosis and lost opportunity for early intervention and early remission. Delays in diagnosis are thought to be a function of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list li-play\">\n<li>Low health professional awareness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low community awareness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Insufficient specialist paediatric rheumatology workforce<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1004\" height=\"52\" src=\"https:\/\/jafa.org.au\/hcphub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/heading.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-817\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jafa.org.au\/hcphub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/heading.png 1004w, https:\/\/jafa.org.au\/hcphub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/heading-300x16.png 300w, https:\/\/jafa.org.au\/hcphub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/heading-768x40.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1004px) 100vw, 1004px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-fd35bd04b7b25bacd314d7efaa8cff25\" style=\"color:#b7320e\">Scope:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Early Diagnosis Program targets health professionals and consumers, including children and families living with JIA, through a phased three-year engagement model. Each year of the program builds upon the previous year\u2019s activities, with ongoing engagement maintained throughout the life of the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program aims to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Equip health professionals to with information, tools and resources to recognise and assess the signs and symptoms of JIA and to refer appropriately and promptly to a paediatric rheumatologist for a definitive diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Support consumers to understand symptoms, seek appropriate care, and navigate pathways to a definitive diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside this, JAFA continues to advocate for expansion of the paediatric rheumatology workforce through targeted state and territory political campaigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Early Diagnosis Program is national in scope, with progressive expansion across three years*:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Year 1: Focused on frontline and community health professionals, notably GPs, eye health professionals, pharmacists and physiotherapists<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Year 2: Continued engagement with Year 1 audiences, while expanding to include orthopaedic surgeons, general paediatricians, sports and exercise physicians, and emergency medicine physicians<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/jafa.org.au\/hcphub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/about-the-program-image-v2-1024x480.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-811\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jafa.org.au\/hcphub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/about-the-program-image-v2-1024x480.png 1024w, https:\/\/jafa.org.au\/hcphub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/about-the-program-image-v2-300x141.png 300w, https:\/\/jafa.org.au\/hcphub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/about-the-program-image-v2-768x360.png 768w, https:\/\/jafa.org.au\/hcphub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/about-the-program-image-v2-1536x720.png 1536w, https:\/\/jafa.org.au\/hcphub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/about-the-program-image-v2.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Year 3: Continued engagement across healthcare professional groups, alongside the introduction of a targeted consumer awareness and disease self-management stream for children, young people and families living with JIA<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b2b5b11113d06e2a5a3b317cd0f6457d\" style=\"color:#b7320e\">Timeframe:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Early Diagnosis Program was launched by the federal Minister for Health and Aged Care, The Hon Mark Butler&nbsp;MP in March 2024.
